Civic Society Awards

The Civic Award

This award, presented for the first time in 2011, recognises outstanding service to the community. It is awarded at the discretion of the committee and may be made to any member of the public.

The inaugural award was made to Mrs Cora Heptonstall in recognition of her many services over the years, including working for the Guide movement, serving as a school governor, serving as a member and chairman of the Town Council, being a founder member of the Howden Arts Festival and Chairman of Howden Town Forum from its start in 1992 to the present day.

The Chairman said that Cora's hard work had resulted in many benefits to Howden and she hoped that the award would indicate how much her efforts were appreciated.

The Chairman's Award is made annually, at her discretion, to a member or members for outstanding service to the Society.

The award for 2011 was made at the Annual General Meeting to Charlotte Hursey, our outgoing Vice Chairman, for her exceptional work on behalf of the Society. The Chairman said that Charlotte was always organised, knowledgeable and helpful and would be irreplaceable.

The Best Buildings Awards 2011

The Society makes annual building awards that cover a broad spectrum. They might be for the sympathetic restoration of properties or premises or could even be for the construction of new buildings that harmonize well within the town.
